WASHINGTON β The Dupont Circle Metro station reopened on Monday evening after closing due to smoke Monday afternoon, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said.
Travel on the Red Line was already adjusted differently on Monday due to planned construction, but that plan wasn't for the Dupont Circle Metro station to be closed altogether.
WMATA said DC Fire and EMS was working in the tunnel due to smoke. WMATA said it was "potentially caused by an arcing insulator."
Shuttle bus service, which had already been in place for the planned construction was extended between Woodley Park and Dupont Circle due to the station closure.
Just before 7:40 p.m., WMATA tweeted that the problem had been resolved and they were reopening the station in Dupont Circle.
"Thank you for your patience this evening," WMATA tweeted. "We know we have to do better, and we apologize. We were able to isolate the power issue that caused the closure and are reopening Dupont Circle station now."
"Credibility is based on honesty. While #wmata service has improved & is generally good, today the [Red Line] was bad, and we own that," WMATA CEO Randy Clarke tweeted. "Team worked very hard to isolate an arching issue that stretched the planned shuttle. Apologies to those impacted. We are doing a review to improve.
The transit authority said they would continue offering 60+ shuttles through midnight.
"We know this has been a frustrating and challenging evening for Red Line customers," WMATA said on X, formerly called Twitter. "We are adding extra shuttle bus service that is running express from Farragut West to Woodley Park and limited from Farragut West to Dupont and Woodley Park. More to come soon."
