All aboard, WMATA is rolling out a new Auto Door function across trains beginning Monday

Auto Doors signals on the platform tell the train which side to open automatically when the train pulls into each station.

WASHINGTON — Beginning Monday, doors on Metro trains will be automatic. This feature will allow doors to open faster.

The new feature will be added to the Blue, Orange, Silver, Green and Yellow Lines in the coming weeks, as Metro operators who have been trained to use the Auto Door function receive certification. Metro introduced the ‘Auto Door’ feature on the Red Line last December.

The feature enables doors to open automatically when the train stops at the platform. Metro says this will help eliminate delays caused by operators having to manually open the doors.

Once Metro operators are certified, the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission will review the certifications and decide whether to continue using the feature across the entire Metrorail system.

Currently, operators are required to open and close train doors manually. They’re instructed to stick their heads out of the window to verify the doors are opening on the right side of the train.

Auto Doors signals on the platform tell the train which side to open automatically when the train pulls into each station. Operators will still have to put their heads out of the window to make sure everyone has exited or boarded safely before manually closing the doors.
