WASHINGTON — The DC Circulator will officially cease operations at the end of the month, according to the District Department of Transportation.
DDOT said in a press release Tuesday that DC Circulator will no longer be available after Dec. 31, 2024.
"After this date, DC Circulator service will no longer be available, and riders are encouraged to seek alternate routes with WMATA’s Metrobus service," the release reads.
DDOT announced it would be phasing out and shutting down the Circulator bus line by the end of the year in July. That day, hundreds of employees received permanent layoff notices. In October, the DC Council passed emergency legislation to protect the DC Circulator employees but it was later vetoed by Mayor Muriel Bowser.
“There was no realistic way for the Council to reverse the Mayor’s shutdown of the DC Circulator in the budget, but we did take steps to better care for the bus drivers, mechanics, and other employees being laid off," said Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen in October.
DDOT says the agency has been working with other transit partners to make sure there are options for the impacted riders who depend on the DC Circulator. Guides outlining these alternatives can be found on the DDOT website.
"DDOT extends its gratitude to riders for their support over the past 19 years and appreciates the community’s understanding during this transition," the agency said in its press release.
