Amtrak maintenance yard fire leaves train cars damaged

The fire was under control just after midnight.

WASHINGTON — Train cars were engulfed in flames late Monday night when a fire broke out in Amtrak’s maintenance yard.

D.C. Fire responded to a box alarm fire at around 11:10 p.m. Monday on the 1400 block of W Street NE at the maintenance yard. When they got there, they found fire on the ground near trains that was possibly involving diesel fuel.

Firefighters used foam units and large diameter hose lines to put out the fire. They moved exposed train cars, but some were damaged by radiant heat.

Hazmat was called when the fire was mostly out to check on diesel fuel runoff.

At 12:16 a.m., the fire was under control. No one was hurt in or fighting the fire, the fire department said.
