Metro is extending the closure of six stations south of Reagan National Airport through Saturday, Nov. 5.
This extension is due to unexpected site conditions and remediation efforts for the future Potomac Yard Station.
Metro officials say work to tie in new tracks to the station, which was predicted to end on Saturday, Oct. 22, will now end on Saturday, Nov. 5.
"The announcement today comes three weeks before stations were scheduled to reopen to give our customers time to plan their trips accordingly," Metro reports.
Transit officials say free shuttle bus service will continue to be available through the extension following the same pattern that customers are using today.
The Potomac Yard Metroway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line will continue to be free, and parking fees at Franconia-Springfield, Van Dorn, and Huntington stations will continue to be waived, according to a news release.
Officials say the new Potomac Yard Station is not set to open this calendar year.
Metro blames the delay in construction on the contractor's failure to meet the project delivery schedule.
Metro will continue working with the contractor to produce an achievable schedule and will provide an update on the new station by the end of 2022.
Major construction started on Saturday, Sept 10, that shut down six Metro stops south of Reagan National Airport. The closures are a part of a roughly nine-month project to fix the Yellow Line tunnel and bridge and connect the new Potomac Yard station to the main railway system.
