Logjam blamed for bridge washout in Anne Arundel County

The bridge closure and detour is expected to last up to two weeks, according to traffic officials.

FORT MEADE, Md. — The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has temporarily closed the MD-198 bridge over the Little Patuxent River near Fort Meade, by Tipton Airport, for emergency roadwork.

Crews are on the scene Thursday working to address a bridge washout and assess damage. The State Highway Administration will then develop a repair plan for the structure and roadway. The bridge closure is expected to last up to two weeks, weather permitting.

Traffic will be directed to MD 32 (Patuxent Freeway) and MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) and back to MD 198 until repairs are complete.

Officials say the washout is due to logjam debris.

Traffic officials remind drivers to slow down in work zones for the safety of other drivers on the road and the crews working to clean up the debris.
