Virginia woman, dog killed on Beltway after car breaks down, police say

Police say a 32-year-old Kerri Snead was struck and killed.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Lanes are back open after a deadly crash investigation closed all lanes of Interstate 95 for several hours early Friday. A woman from Virginia was struck and killed. Investigators say she was on the highway after her vehicle broke down.

Prince George's County police and fire crews responded to a crash on the I-95 outer loop at Exit 9 Allentown Road early Friday morning just before 3 a.m. When emergency personnel arrived on scene, they found a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle. That person, later identified as 32-year-old Kerri Snead, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Maryland State Police.

Investigators believe Snead was traveling south on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway when her car began experiencing a mechanical issue. Snead, another person and a dog got out of the vehicle and attempted to cross the highway. Snead and the dog were struck by a Hyundai Elantra. Snead and the dog died. The other person was not hurt.

Lanes were blocked for approximately five hours for the crash investigation.

The driver of the Hyundai was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center in Largo for treatment of their injuries. No charges are being filed at this time, according to Maryland State Police.
