1 hospitalized in I-495 crash in Fairfax County

Northbound lanes of the Capital Beltway were shut down Friday morning due to the crash, leading to miles of backups and delays. All lanes have since reopened.

WASHINGTON — Drivers are being urged to use alternate routes and expect significant delays due to a crash on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County Friday morning.

All northbound lanes of the Capital Beltway were closed at mile marker 43.5, south of VA-193 Exit 44 in Fairfax County around 9 a.m. According to traffic officials, traffic was backed up about four miles approaching the crash scene.

A spokesperson for Virginia State Police said the crash happened just before 9 a.m. Troopers were called to a report of a three-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-495 near the exit for the George Washington Parkway. Troopers say at least one person was hospitalized as a result of the crash. That person has been taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment. The severity of that person's injuries, and their current condition at the hospital is not known.

Traffic is being diverted to VA-193 (Exit 44), according to authorities. Inner Loop delays begin near Interstate 66. Rubbernecking delays begin in Maryland, near I-270.

By 11 a.m. Virginia Department of Transportation officials said the crash was cleared and all lanes were back open.
