MARYLAND, USA — The cost of getting around in Maryland is changing this summer.
The gas tax in the Free State is ticking down beginning July 1. But other fees you pay the state will skyrocket this summer.
Beginning July 1:
- Maryland’s gas tax decreases from 47 cents per gallon to 46.1 (1.9% change)
- 2-year vehicle registration fees increase from $135 for a standard sedan to $221 (64% change)
- 2-year registration for heavier vehicles like some SUV’s and minivans over 3,500 pounds increases from $187 to $323 (73% change)
In addition, Maryland is reclassifying vehicles so that many more makes and models will fall into the more expensive “heavy” category. The old, more-costly category was for vehicles over 3,700 pounds, but in July that decreases to 3,500 pounds.
Lawmakers also added a $125 surcharge to electric vehicle registration and $100 surcharge to hybrid vehicles to make up for the gas tax revenue the state is losing on EVs.
In a statement, Maryland's Motor Vehicle Administrator Christine Nizer said, “As directed by state law, the MVA is required to adjust vehicle registration fees that will help provide critical revenue for the Transportation Trust Fund, which ensures all of the state’s infrastructure is in a state of good repair."
The revenue also supports emergency medical services in Maryland.
An additional cost going up in Maryland will be the automated fines for speeding in a work zone. Starting Saturday, they are doubling from $40 to $80 on a first offense in hopes of protecting worker safety. But beginning in January, fines for multiple offenses could go as high as $1000.
