LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. — Friday night storms cause damage to traffic signal, utility poles on Loudoun County’s Route 7 near Bartholomew Fair Drive

A traffic signal and utility poles were damaged in Friday night storms. Drivers should anticipate delays in the area of Route 7 near Bartholomew Fair Drive in Loudoun County.

The announcement specifies that drivers should carefully follow utility crew directions and anticipate possible delays. Currently, there is only east and west travel on Route 7, no turns onto Bartholomew Fair Drive.

Drivers should beware that eastbound Route 7 is limited to the two left travel lanes (right travel is blocked by repair vehicles). Bartholomew Fair Drive is closed off at Benedict Drive and the Exxon gas station can only be accessed by Benedict Drive. In addition, the exit from Campus Drive can only be a right-hand turn (westbound Route 7).

Delays may also occur nearby the Potomac Run Plaza shopping center.

Earlier this week, a driver in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, drove their car into a sinkhole after plowing past road work signals. The water-filled sinkhole shut down South Osborne Road, Crain highway and swallowed a car on Wednesday. The incident caused the driver minor injuries, officials said.

WSSC spokesperson Luis Maya said that the accident was caused by a person who drove through work zone barrier cones. Whether the choice to drive through the cones was purposeful or accidental is currently unknown.

"People have to respect that work zone and we preach that all the time. If you see cones and our crews, please be careful," Maya advised. "Please drive carefully and follow any directions that we give."
