HYATTSVILLE, Md. — There are major delays on southbound Baltimore-Washington Parkway after two crashes, one of which was fatal, and involving multiple cars in Prince George's County Monday morning, U.S. Park Police said.
The first crash was reported around 5 a.m. near the split to New York Avenue in Hyattsville, police said. Three vehicles and a pedestrian were involved in that crash. The cause of the crash is unclear.
The pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
"We're not sure why the pedestrian was on the travel portion of the road," U.S. Park Police Lt. Simeon Klebaner said.
Three additional vehicles were involved in subsequent crashes, police said. Although it's unclear what caused the subsequent crashes, it's likely a result of the previous crashes, police said.
"We're doing a full collision reconstruction at this time. We're taking measurements. We're looking at all of the data we can compile," Klebaner said.
Delays begin just before Maryland Route 450. All southbound traffic was rerouted to Marylad Route 202.
Drivers were asked to avoid the parkway if possible and to use alternate routes.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call U.S. Park Police.
