Crews lay first tracks of Purple Line in Maryland

NEW CARROLLTON, Md. — Crews lay the first tracks of the new Purple Line in Maryland on Thursday.

The new line, slated to start testing in 2021, will connect commuters between New Carrollton and Bethesda.

The $5.6 billion Purple Line project will be the largest transportation project ever constructed by the State of Maryland when it’s finished in 2021.

The Purple Line will eventually give commuters a 16.2 mile link between New Carrollton and Bethesda.

The light rail system will tie together the Red, Green and Orange Metro lines and is projected to carry as many as 74,000 daily riders by 2040.
