WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Police are investigating after a crash on Interstate 95 in Prince William County left one person dead and backed up traffic for miles during the Wednesday morning commute.
All lanes have since reopened.
Around 9:35 a.m., Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)'s Northern Virginia division stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that a crash has resulted in all lanes on northbound I-95 blocked just north of Opitz Boulevard (Route 642). By 11 a.m., delays stretched approximately six miles, according to traffic officials.
VDOT informed WUSA9 that someone was injured in the crash, it is unknown at this time how the collision happened. Virginia State Police say one person is confirmed to be dead due to their serious injuries sustained. No information has been released about the person, this includes their name, age, and where they are from.
The crash is said to have happened on the northbound lanes before Exit 158 on the highway shortly before 9 a.m., police said.
VDOT announced all lanes had reopened around 1:15 p.m.
