Bus crashes into a parking garage, catches fire in Fairfax Co.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and one person was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

FAIRFAX, Va. — Police are investigating after a bus crashed into a parking garage before catching fire in Fairfax County Tuesday evening.

According to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, the bus crashed into a parking garage in the 12000 block of Government Center Pkwy. When first responders arrived, they found the bus had also caught fire.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. No passengers were on the bus when it crashed but the bus driver was taken to an area hospital with injuries but is expected to survive.

The fire was eventually contained to only the electric bus, but firefighters say it could have been a lot worse.

“Crews did a really good job, obviously they encountered some really difficult conditions our hazardous material unit special operation teams were able to quickly mitigate the incident, really prevent it from becoming anything further," said Fairfax County Spokesperson Mitchell Clark. "There were a lot of other vehicles in this parking garage at the time of the fire.”

There is no word on what caused the bus to crash or how much damage the building sustained at this time.
