TYSONS, Va. — A 71-year-old D.C. man is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 495, according to traffic officials. The crash shut down lanes on the Beltway for several hours Thursday morning.
Police say five vehicles were involved in the collision that occurred around 6:52 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 495, near Exit 45.
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the crash.
The victim in this case has been identified as 71-year-old Robert Blakely of Washington, D.C. Police say he was ejected from his 2019 Ford F-150 pickup during the collision.
Only one other person was injured in the crash. Police say that individual was a passenger in another car and was treated for minor injuries.
The Virginia State Police Fairfax Division Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is assisting with the ongoing crash investigation. Charges are pending.
Delays began in the Springfield Interchange and extended past Little River Turnpike during Thursday's morning commute.
