PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Prince George's County authorities say two firefighters were hurt after the ambulance they were in was struck by a tractor trailer on Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) Thursday night.
Police say the crash happened around 9 p.m. on the Inner Loop of the Beltway. Prince George's County firefighters were on scene responding to a previous crash when a tractor trailer hit the stopped vehicles. The two firefighters were taken to the hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.
It is Maryland law to move over when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying warning signals – including hazard warning lights, road flares, or other caution signals including traffic cones, caution signs, or non-vehicular warning signs.
Violating the law is a misdemeanor carrying a $110 fine and one point on your license. If the violation causes a crash, the fine is $150 and three points. If there is a death or serious injury, the fine is $750 and three points.
Police are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
