Here's where new speed cameras are going up in Arlington County

The installation is part of the county's PhotoSPEED program, which identified vulnerable school zones that would most benefit from the automated safety measures.

ARLINGTON, Va. — School zones in Arlington County have installed more speed cameras ahead of the new school year in an effort to combat speeding and dangerous driving.

The installation is part of the county's PhotoSPEED program, which identified vulnerable school zones that would most benefit from the automated safety measures. It's part of Arlington County's Vision Zero strategy to "eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.”

The 10 PhotoSPEED cameras will be installed at the following locations:

  • NB 1300 block of N. Kirkwood Road
  • WB 5800 block of Wilson Boulevard
  • SB 400 block of N. George Mason Drive
  • SB 600 block of S. Carlin Springs Road
  • SB Unit block of S. Carlin Springs Road
  • SB 1900 block of S. George Mason Drive
  • NB 1900 block of S George Mason Drive
  • SB 1200 block of S. George Mason Drive
  • EB 4500 block of Washington Boulevard
  • EB 5200 block of Yorktown Boulevard

The speed limit remains at 20 MPH during flashing lights at these school zone locations. Warning signs have been posted 1,000 feet before each speed camera, and drivers have a warning period before violators will be issued a $100 ticket for each individual infraction.

School starts Aug. 26 in Arlington County, and the warning period will remain in effect from the start of school until Sept. 24.

Virginia enacted legislation to allow speed safety cameras in school and work zones back in 2020. Arlington County's Board adopted the proposed changes to the County Code in Jan. 2022.
