3rd Street Tunnel reopens to drivers

Impacted roadways are expected to reopen by midnight Monday.

WASHINGTON — Anyone who usually takes the 3rd Street Tunnel to get home is being told to expect delays  Monday evening after a blown transformer knocked out the lights.

As of 6 p.m., the tunnel has reopened for travel but traffic remains heavy. The following ramps inside the tunnel are still closed:

  •  Massachusetts Ave NW on-ramp to Tunnel in Southbound direction
  • D St NW on-ramp to Tunnel in Southbound direction
  • C St NW & D St NW exit ramps from the Tunnel in the Northbound direction

Just before 5 p.m. Monday, the Metropolitan Police Department alerted the public to the closure of the tunnel via X, formally known as Twitter.

MPD says DDOT reports lights went out in the Northbound 3rd Street Tunnel due to a blown transformer. DDOT Mall Tunnel personnel, electrical contractors, and Pepco responded to the scene.

Lighting restoration in progress for I-395 Tunnel. Impacted roadways are set to reopen by midnight.
