STAFFORD, Va. — One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash involving two tractor-trailers and a car along southbound Interstate 95 Tuesday morning, Virginia State Police (VSP) said.
The crash happened around 4 a.m. at the 131-mile-marker near the Rappahannock River Bridge between the City of Fredricksburg and Stafford County.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, both tractor-trailers appeared to be fully-loaded and lost their loads, police said. One of the tractor-trailers was overturned and on its side.
Towing crews responded to the scene just before 6 a.m. to clear the overturned tractor-trailer and other vehicles.
The crash caused a 2 to 4-mile back up as crews worked to clear the scene and to also treat the roads once the highway was allowed to reopen. A few detours were established to allow drivers to safely bypass the area.
Around 8 a.m., cars that were stuck near the scene were guided out of the area.
One person was pronounced dead following the crash. It's unknown if the person was either in the tractor-trailers or the passenger vehicle involved in the collision.
At this time, it remains unclear if the road conditions Tuesday morning due to the inclement weather are to blame for the crash.
The crash remains under investigation, VSP said.
Weather conditions Tuesday morning caused icy roads and slick spots. Snow showers and flurries hit the DMV area overnight into Tuesday morning causing some areas to experience light to heavy snow accumulations.
