Nothing Works: Surviving an EMP

The unthinkable happens. There's no electricity, cars don’t work, your furnace is off. This would be the result of an electromagnetic pulse.

WASHINGTON — We don’t want to think about the unthinkable. There's no electricity, cars don’t work, your furnace is off. Nothing works. This would be the result of an electromagnetic pulse.

These powerful bursts of energy can have natural or human causes. Natural causes include solar and meteoroid activity, lightning strikes, electrostatic discharge. Manmade EMPs result from nuclear explosions, EMP weapons, and many other purposeful or accidental means.

Small-scale EMPs happen quite often. Since we are so reliant on electrical systems, a big-scale EMP would be extremely disastrous.

EMPs have happened before, and EMPs will happen again. Thus, we need to prepare to survive an EMP. The best way to prepare yourself is to do your research. Learn all you can about Electromagnetic pulses, and study ways to prevent damage to your vital electronics.

As in all disaster planning, store sufficient emergency food, water and necessary supplies. As your car may not work, have alternate escape plans. Prepare ways to defend yourself, since times like these can be very chaotic.

Remember, an EMP would affect all the electrical systems in your home and outside.

If such an event happens, immediately try to determine the scope and type as soon as possible to plan your next steps. While the government attempts to prevent such occurences, it cannot stop all scenarios.

You and your family must be self-reliant and ready for any disaster. Educate yourself and be proactive. Preparing for an EMP, or any other kind of disaster, could save your life, and the lives of those you care most about.

Have a plan -- you won’t regret it.
