WASHINGTON — The third annual STEM for Her Day brought out more than 350 girls from across the DMV, to gather at the International Monetary Fund in DC to learn all about different STEM opportunities and network with professionals in science, technology, engineering and math.
The girls had the chance to attend different sessions covering a variety of topics, while also networking with industry leaders.
"The chance to connect with event partners, to talk to speakers, to other women in STEM to learn about a career path that might be in their future," said Jennifer Fortney, the executive director of STEM for Her.
Students were thrilled to learn alongside like-minded individuals.
"I met other girls who have the same dreams as me and they're able to share a bunch of opportunities and I'm able to share my opportunities with them," said Melanie Encinas, a senior at Wakefield High School.
The excitement for this event was tangible.
"The energy, like, you can feel the energy where it's like we're all here for the same purpose," said Lehiam Seyoum, a Wakefield High School student. "We're all here to further our education or further our STEM route. These events teach me that STEM is not just sitting behind a computer. It's also connecting with other people, it's also having, you know, a community."
