Montgomery Co. expands recycling program

Mattresses, box springs, books, bikes, construction materials, and even medical equipment are now recyclable in Montgomery County.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — We brought ECO9 out to the Montgomery County Material Recovery Center to learn more about how it’s easier than ever to recycle more than ever

Jon Monger is the Director of the Department of Environmental Protection for Montgomery County and he spoke to WUSA9 about the new recycling program in the county. “At the Montgomery County transfer station, we're expanding all of our recycling programs in a way that's meant to be very much meeting consumers where they are in terms of making it easier for you to bring things that you no longer want,” said Monger.

This recycling expansion now includes things like mattresses, box springs, books, bikes and even construction materials. You can also recycle durable medical equipment that you no longer need. The county will refurbish and reuse it. This includes items like crutches and wheelchairs.

According to Monger, “You can bring them here the equipment will get refurbished, and it'll be given to one of our neighbors in need.”

Not only can you drop off your recyclables, but you can also pick something up! Donated construction materials and bikes are available for pick-up for Montgomery County residents. County Executive Marc Elrich spoke about the many ways donated bikes can be used. “The bicycles are exciting! If you like to fix bikes and you know, you could fix them up and resell them. So there are a lot of opportunities not just for if you need it for yourself, but if somebody's interested in, you know, how could a small business develop by using some of what's available here.”

So this holiday season, instead of throwing away the old to make room for the new... Recycle it!
