MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — The SEED Classroom in Black Hill Regional Park officially makes its debut at 1 P.M. Saturday, May 18. This project has been in the works for over a decade! It will provide people of all ages with an eco-friendly space to learn about sustainability.
'SEED' stands for Sustainable Education Every Day. Jennifer Scully of Montgomery Parks shared everything there is to know about this exciting new classroom with WUSA9.
“Our hope is that this building will help teach about climate change and STEM initiatives and inspire everyone to live in a more sustainable way that's in harmony with nature,” says Scully.
The SEED Classroom is full of educational opportunities for people of all ages. Each detail, from sustainably sourced materials to first-of-its-kind bathrooms, has been carefully crafted.
“Everything is exposed that normally, in a normal classroom, would be covered up by drywall or paint. So the beams are exposed [and] the HVAC system is exposed. This is to help us realize all the work and engineering that goes into making our homes and classrooms comfortable. We have a truth window which will show you what the insulation looks like and how it all is actually constructed. There's a composting toilet, we have solar tubes which help light the building naturally, and we have a water cistern which collects the rainwater and will help flush the composting toilet and feed our green living wall,” Scully explained.
The SEED Classroom will host field trips, and preschool programs, and can even be rented for birthday parties and meetings. It’s also located right next to a new community garden giving easy access to hands-on environmental education.
