Environmental activist recovering after truck driver hit her while she was biking to work

An 18-wheeler struck Kaela Bamberger Dec. 12 and she broke bones in her pelvis and back, and had severe road rash. This is her road to recovery.

WASHINGTON — A bicyclist is recovering after her family said she was hit by a driver in a truck in Northeast D.C.

According to police, 28-year-old Kaela Bamberger was involved in an accident on Dec. 12 near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and 4th Street NE.

Bamberger's brother, Jerehme Bamberger, said she was biking to work when an 18-wheeler struck her. Police have not revealed the exact cause of the accident.

Bamberger said that since the incident, his sister has undergone several surgeries, including the removal of her spleen.

"She had significant road rash," he said. "(And is) being treated by the burn unit. She had bones in her pelvis and her back broken."

Bamberger is known in the District's environmental activism community. She helped organize the #ShutdownDC climate strike protests in the District in September.

So far, a GoFundMe page set up to help Bamberger's family care for her has raised more than $6,000 dollars in one day.

Bamberger said his sister is remaining positive about her recovery.

"She's incredibly motivated to recover," he said. "Her fighting spirit and just the light inside of her has really been keeping all of us going."

A spokesperson for DC Police said the investigation into the accident is "ongoing."
