WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Did you know that a Washington Senators catcher named Gabby Street once caught a baseball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument?
Hall of Fame Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully told the story while calling the Nationals game in Los Angeles last week.
In 1908, Street made a bet with a journalist that he could catch a baseball from the 555-foot drop. Street stood at the bottom of the monument, glove on left hand. Thirteen baseballs were dropped. Street later told the Post that he missed 11 of them, but caught balls 4 and 13.
