Capitals unveil 50th anniversary branding

The logo will show homage to its roots, with it being inspired by the inaugural 1974 Capitals lettering.

WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals was established in 1974, meaning that this year marks the franchise's 50th anniversary. With the milestone comes plans of celebrations and the unveiling of the anniversary logo.

“We are excited to launch a celebration of the Capitals' vibrant past and honor our history as we mark 50 years as an NHL franchise,” said President of Business Operations and Chief Business Officer at Monumental Sports & Entertainment Jim Van Stone. “Fans can anticipate several events and initiatives that will uniquely commemorate this milestone, and we are eager to share the celebration with our fanbase. We are also proud to highlight the Capitals' impact off the ice, including the franchise’s contributions to the community and the growth of youth hockey in the region as we pay tribute to 50 years and embrace the future of Capitals hockey.”

With the 50th logo, the Capitals will also have a special anniversary patch players will wear on their team jerseys. 

The home of the Capitals, Capital One Arena, will feature a 50th anniversary logo. The logo will show homage to its roots, with it being inspired by the inaugural 1974 Capitals lettering. It will also feature a reverse-italic 50 and a hockey stick, along with the red and blue stars from the original sweaters.

During the season there will be a series of special events commemorating 50 years since the team's 1974-75 debut in the National Hockey League. It all begins with the Caps' 50th Kickoff Celebration and outdoor concert at Capital One Arena on Thursday, Oct. 10.  

Other key highlights include an Alumni Weekend, Eras Nights, and a Home Opener Rock the Red Carpet and Pregame Ceremony.
