Commanders punter Tress Way is having a great time not punting

Way may not be doing much right now, but he's having fun anyway.

GLENDALE, Ariz — Commanders punter Tress Way hasn't been doing much these days. The team's Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals was the first in the Super Bowl era to not feature a turnover or a punt.

The Commanders have scored on every drive, not including kneel-downs, in two straight games. Way is fine with that.

"I used to punt at one time," he told WUSA9's Chick Hernandez. "I'm ready to go in case it ever happens again, but this is a lot of fun right now."

Way said he noticed a difference while practicing for the team's showdown with the Arizona Cardinals.

"We were out at practice and I was like, 'Man, I feel pretty good!' And it also felt like I hadn't done this in a long time," he said.

Way has called his team's performance thus far unbelievable. He said the longer he stays on the sidelines, the more excited he gets.

"When you're in the middle of the game you also become a fan. Offense is cheering on defense, defense is cheering on offense — I'm kind of cheering on everybody. It's gotten to the point where, on third down, I'm kind of expecting them to convert. It is a lot of fun to watch. But yes, I am ready to roll whenever it's called," Way said.

While Way may not be using his leg. He is the holder for Austin Seibert, who went seven for seven in Week 2, accounting for all of the team's points against the New York Giants.

"I have had a lot of experience [as a holder]. And while I don't want to give him too much credit because he beat me in the state championship in high school, Tyler Ott may be the best longsnapper in the league," Way admitted.

He said he hopes he doesn't have to punt against the Cardinals on Sunday.

"Obviously. I would really sound like a jerk if I said, 'I hope we punt every single time,'" Way said. "I like to put my stamp on the game, but I do understand it's good if I'm not out there."
