WASHINGTON — Black Monday has come with big news for the Washington Commanders -- the team has parted ways with Ron Rivera. The coach has been with the team for four seasons.
The team confirmed the news with WUSA9 first and then broke the news on social media with a statement from Josh Harris, a managing partner of the Commanders.
"As we look ahead, we recognize the results this season were not good enough and a strategic shift in leadership and approach is necessary," the statement said.
It closed with remarks about how this is a crucial offseason for the team, and how they continue to be motivated and inspired by the way the fans have responded since the new ownership. Now, the fans are remaining outspoken about the team that ended the regular season with a 4-13 record.
In an X, formerly known as Twitter, post one fan stated that Rivera came to the DMV and took on the team that "no one was really checking for."
Another X user commented that the team's decision to release Rivera when they did shows "class."
In addition to Commanders fans reacting, Carolina Panthers fans -- who know Riverboat Ron for his nine seasons as head coach with the team -- have also had plenty to say Monday. A Charlotte Hornets Reddit account is already calling for a Rivera return.
Some fans of other teams are also asking for Rivera to be given another chance in the NFL. One Philly fan said they want to see him as the next defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.
But multiple people are making their bets that Rivera could be picked up by the Chicago Bears as his next coaching move, considering his connection to the team as a player. One Bears fan even remarked that he is an "outstanding" coach.
Of course, given the way this season played out, many commenters have weighed in to say they aren't surprised by Josh Harris' decision.
"Duh in 4 season[s] only made the playoff once with a 7-9 record," one commenter said. "In 4 seasons never had an above . 500 record. Missed playoffs three straight years, 1 win against the Cowboys in the last three years -- It's time."
Another person commented that the news happened so close to Rivera's birthday, Dec. 7, which happened to be the day the team lost to the Dallas Cowboys 38-10, marking his final game as head coach in D.C.
Rivera has also reacted to the news himself, with a statement on the team's social media accounts.
"We did win an NFC East title in 2020, but we fell short since then and for that, I am truly disappointed," he said. "You are loyal, passionate fans and I only see good things ahead for you all."
Many fans are calling for more than just a Rivera change -- a new quarterback is one demand, but some people want a whole new team.
The future of the Washington Commanders' head coach position, as well as Rivera's next steps, are currently unknown. The team did confirm with WUSA9 that Bob Myers and Rick Spielman would help in the search for new team leadership.
