ASHBURN, Va. — Commanders defensive lineman Jonathan Allen practiced Wednesday for the first time since tearing his pec muscle week six. It was originally called a season-ending injury. Now, Allen has entered the 21-day practice window to come off injured reserve.
"Very soon after surgery we knew there was an opportunity," said Allen at his locker Wednesday.
"Once he was able, I would say maybe just a few weeks ago, and say this could be a realistic thing," said Quinn. "Seeing the surgeon, seeing that process go, because he looked not like a person that had this surgery. Usually, you see a lot less on one side. He’s built different for sure."
Allen played in the first six games of the season recording 13 tackles and two sacks. The leader on the Commanders says he felt good during his first practice post-surgery.
“I think it’s just about going out there and just feeling comfortable. Today was a really good day for me, first day, but that’s all it was for me, a first day. We’re going to take it one day at a time and go from there," said Allen. "Just trying to work my you-know-what off every day so I can help this team in any way possible.”
“I was probably more happy than he was," said defensive lineman Johnny Newton. "Like I’ve always said, that’s my big brother. Having him out there was a great feeling for the D-line. He’s a leader for the D-line, him and Payne. Having him out there just, a new level of energy and happiness for everybody.”
Allen says he's excited to re-join his team with playoff's hopefully on the horizon.
"Whenever you get a chance to play meaningful December football it’s going to be awesome," said Allen. "Can’t wait to get out there and help the guys."
Allen has 21 days to be taken off injured reserve. That can happen before any of the final three games. If he doesn’t return in the next three weeks, he’ll be on I-R the rest of the season.
