'Stay in your lane and focus' | Here's what Austin Seibert said before going 7-7 on field goals for the Washington Commanders

Austin Seibert was signed after Washington announced the release of Cade York after week 1.

GREATER LANDOVER, Md. — Newly-signed kicker Austin Seibert helped Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders beat the New York Giants 21-18 Sunday.

Seibert's seven field goals came mere days after he replaced Cade York, who missed each of his two attempts in the season opener against Tampa Bay. The Commanders signed the 27-year-old Seibert Monday.

Seibert enters his sixth season in the NFL, playing for his fifth team. Cleveland drafted him in 2019 where he hit 25 of his 29 field goal attempts. Since then, he's only had 27 regular-season field goal attempts.

"I’ve bounced around a little bit and that’s fine," said Seibert. "That’s just the journey that I’ve been on, and I proved myself enough last year for the Jets to re-sign me and competed through camp and proved myself enough through the preseason to get this opportunity here and my plan is to continue doing that."

Seibert, who was with the Jets this preseason, kicked the game-winner against Washington in the preseason opener.

"We’re really pumped on Austin being here and looking forward to him getting started," head coach Dann Quinn said last week.

Quinn says he remembers Seibert drilling kicks in the pouring rain during joint practices with the Jets, something Seibert said was brought up when he was signed.

"It was mentioned, but at the same time all you can do is put your head down, stay in your lane and focus on yourself and those values and just take one step in the right direction every day," the kicker said just days before the Giants matchup.

After the game, he was happy with his performance. “I guess that’s a great way to kind of welcome myself to the team and win a football game, so I’m happy with it,” Seibert said.

Seibert played for the University of Oklahoma and was named the Big 12 Special Player of the Year in 2018. The Cleveland Browns selected Seibert during route 5 of the 2019 NFL Draft.
