Report: Chicago Bears interested in Commanders' Eric Bieniemy for head coaching job

The Bears have not fired their head coach Matt Eberflus yet.

WASHINGTON — The Washington Commanders are on their bye week, but they continue to make headlines. A new report from CBS Sports says the Chicago Bears are interested in Eric Bieniemy as a possible head coach this offseason.

Right now, it's just speculation because the Bears have not officially fired their head coach yet.

Bieniemy is in his first season as Washington's assistant head coach and offensive coordinator after five years and two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs. Bieniemy's future with the Commanders could be tied to current head coach Ron Rivera, whose job security is in question after a disappointing 4-9 season under new ownership.

After a season of trying to get things right, and each week telling the media that they are progressing in certain areas, that talk is no more, Rivera told WUSA9's Chick Hernandez.

"You know, the whole period of growth and development, the whole period of going through the process, in my opinion, is over," Rivera said. "We're far enough into the season now."

We asked the head coach if he is worried about his future with the team.

“I know you've talked to the owner, Josh Harris, he’s a first-year NFL owner," Hernandez said during his most recent interview with Rivera. "Has he told you, like, don’t worry about the season, we’ll do what we're going to do, whatever we're going to do after the season going forward?“

“Exactly, and that's what I've tried to do is just stay focused and try to do the task at hand, and that's get better as a football team," Rivera replied.

While the future of the Commanders coaching staff remains up in the air, the team tells WUSA9 they do not plan to make any big coaching changes until after the season ends.

The Commanders will take on the Los Angels Rams in L.A. on Dec. 17.
