Commanders take over DC high school's homecoming football game

Josh Morgan, a Warriors alumnus and former Washington wide receiver, joined in the festivities

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — The Commanders are on their way to New York tonight ahead of tomorrow’s game with the Giants, but the team is still making a difference right here in the DMV.

For the second straight week, the team threw a tailgate at an area high school, this time at H.D. Woodson in Northeast DC for a big rivalry game against Dunbar High School.

In attendance, Washington Commanders alumnus, Josh Morgan, who played his high school football at H.D. Woodson.

“Having a positive impact on the kids, it’s always a blessing, man," said Morgan who walked out with the Warriors for the coin toss Saturday after joining the celebration of his school and former franchise. “The things they’ve done since the new ownership has come along has been amazing. It’s been everything the people around here needed, it’s been everything people have been asking for and they’ve been delivering in a major way on the field and off the field.”

“This is just incredible," said Dr. Tianna Adams, the Director of Specialized Instruction at H.D. Woodson & Homecoming Chairman. "Emerging, it just makes sense, and we hope we can continue this kind of partnership because it brings positive attention to this community and really shows our current players what’s possible.”

Bringing a new excitement for alumni.

“I’m so glad to see that they’re taking an interest in the public schools," said former H.D. Woodson principal Aona Jefferson.

“We have alums from the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, 2000s. Old, young, they’ve all come back home and really are pouring into Woodson," said Adams. "It’s really showing the younger students, ‘wow, coming home really is fun and actually means something.’”

Even to one of its most famous alumni.

“It’s always a blessing when you can come back and see some of the same people that were here when you were here, see the ones before you, pay homage to them for paving the way for us," said Morgan.
