ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders have added another important piece to their offensive staff in run game coordinator Anthony Lynn. Lynn has 23 years of coaching experience, with four of those as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
As the assistant head coach running backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers for the last two years, the run games he influenced were incredibly successful, finishing first in yardage in 2022 and third in 2023.
Lynn comes from the Mike Shanahan coaching tree, beginning his career in 2000 as a special teams assistant with Shanahan's Denver Broncos. Since then, he has primarily worked as a running backs coach, offensive coordinator, and assistant head coach, most recently with Mike's son, Kyle Shanahan, who is currently the head coach of the 49ers.
Lynn will be working closely with newly minted offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury who, during his time as the Arizona Cardinals' head coach, manufactured top-10 rushing offenses three out of his four years in the desert.
The move adds another strong personality to a locker room that appears to be in the midst of a culture shift set into motion by new team leaders Adam Peters and Dan Quinn. It also seems to round out the main offensive staff, excluding any assistants to be hired moving forward.
