WASHINGTON — The Commanders next chapter involves WUSA9, as a new partnership between our station and the team was just announced Tuesday. For fans and viewers of both WUSA and the team, this partnership means more content and insider access.
Our motto at WUSA is to inform, inspire and impact, but we wanted to hear how the team was feeling, so we went straight to the Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn.
"This whole fan base, like they're a part of this team, and so knowing how to inform them in terms of what took place on the last game, what we should expect in the next game, what we're doing in the community ... knowing that, like you're part of it, like you're part of the team," Quinn said.
WUSA9 will have several shows devoted to the Commanders, one of which is Commanders Weekly, which will highlight what the team is doing in the community. Quinn is a big supporter of the military, of which there is a large contingent in the DMV.
“What I've learned, not just here, but through experiences, is man, [the military] does team better than anybody in the world," Quinn said. "And so knowing that, knowing how to do that, there's some lessons that we can take, we can learn. We'll never compare what we do to what the military does in battle, but what we can take away from that is this sense of connection and belonging and purpose and following that call because once we know, when you, you do belong to something and you have something to follow, that is really powerful, and that's the best of the best teams.
Quinn went on to say that commaraderie and connection is what he's trying to build in Washington -- on and off the field.
"That's really what we're trying to create here, not just with the players, but with the fan base," the coach continued. "We have something to follow, and there's real purpose behind that. But at the end of it, man, they have this connection and willing to go further, because of the person that's next to them. Those are some lessons that definitely apply with football."
One of the other aspects of the new partnership between WUSA9 and the Commanders is that every Monday, Chick Hernandez will sit down for an exclusive 1-on-1 with Quinn to recap the game just played. There will be some laughs and some tough times too.
“Basically what that day is, whether it's for a coach or for a ballplayer, that's tell the truth day -- this is what happened in the game," Quin said. "And so on that day, we put up the things that we did well, but we also put up the things that hey, this needs attention or work on or here's the lesson, you know, moving forward, because if you don't get to the truth, after a win or a loss, then you could be missing something. We'll always do those and debrief the game. Going back to the military term, like an after action report to say, this is what went well, this is what needs attention. And this is what we'll do and change moving forward. So those days of telling the truth on that day with you and I, that'll be no different than we'll do with the team to make sure that we all know you know how we're going to go about our business together."
