Jack Kent Cooke's son breaks silence about losing the Redskins

Jack Kent Cooke's son talks about losing the franchise his father ran so successfully.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The son of former Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke broke his silence Tuesday about how his family lost the team.

John Kent Cooke spoke to former Redskins player Darrell Green on Great Day Washington about how he lost the bid to keep ownership of the franchise and his father's name on the stadium.

Although John said his father didn't "give it thought" to have his name on the stadium, he thought the team should have forgone the money the team earned by renaming the stadium FedEx Field and instead kept Jack Kent Cooke's name on it.

"The problem was we were so successful...because of the glory years [the Redskins] had in the 1980s," he said. "...an awful lot of people tried to buy the Redskins."

John Kent Cooke said he bid more than $700 million for the stadium, but Dan Snyder and his partners outbid him.

Later in a Facebook Live, John Cooke continued to discuss the process in which he was outbid for the team.
