WASHINGTON — Fresh off their first ever Big East title game appearance in school history, the Georgetown Women's Basketball Team arrived back on campus Tuesday afternoon, with their heads held high, after achieving what many said they could not. The Hoyas lost in the title game to top-seeded UConn, 78 - 42 - which isn't bad for a team picked to finish next to last in the preseason polls.
"For the people who support us, for the people who don't support us, let's go out there and do it because you want to prove people right and prove people wrong," Hoyas Guard Kelsey Granson said
The Hoyas say this entire season is in honor of the late Tasha Butts. Back in April, Butts became the head coach at Georgetown. Six months later, Butts passed away from breast cancer. From that moment on, The Hoyas vowed to show everyone that they are "Tasha Tough." No doubt, they've done just that.
"It's hard to articulate," Hoyas Forward Garceann Bennett said. "She was so important to our development in the months that she spent with us while she was here. I feel so grateful to have been blessed by her presence."
Butts' top assistant, Darnell Haney, took over as Georgetown's interim head coach. Following Monday night's title game, he learned the word interim would be removed from the title very soon. While humbled by the recognition, Haney said his goal is to finish what Coach Butts started.
"I thank her and her wonderful family," Haney said. "I got a call from her mother this morning congratulating the team, congratulating me. I'm extremely indebted to her. I'm extremely indebted to this university and these young women. They've done a great job and did it the right way."
