Maryland men's lacrosse team falls short of national title against Notre Dame

The Terps lost 15-5, and the Fighting Irish secured back-to-back titles.

PHILADELPHIA — The University of Maryland men's lacrosse team fell short of an NCAA national championship on Monday. The Terps were trying to hoist the trophy for the fifth time in school history against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Philadelphia.

The Irish were the No. 1 team in the country and the defending champions. After a two-hour weather delay, the Terps came out hot. The underdogs scored two goals in quick succession early.

But Notre Dame was ranked No. 1 for a reason. After falling behind early, the Irish scored 10 of the next 11 goals. They went on to win by a final score of 15-5, securing back-to-back national titles.

After the match, Maryland coach John Tillman said he was proud of his team.

"If you want to just look at us for 60 minutes, you can judge us that way. I refuse to. I know what these guys have done since August. I love them, I'm proud of them. I'm sad to say goodbye to a lot of them, but I'm excited for the next part of their lives because those guys are going to crush it," Tillman said.
