WASHINGTON — The Bowie State football (12-1) team made school history advancing to the Division 2 quarterfinals for the first time. The Bulldogs defeated Newberry 13-10 on Saturday and will now travel to Georgia to face the No. 1 seed Valdosta State (10-1) for the Super Region 2 title game on Dec. 4 in Valdosta, Ga., at the Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. "We're on that Midnight Train to Georgia," said Defensive Coordinator Antone' Sewell.
Bowie State has been on a roll after losing their season opener against Delaware State. The Bulldogs have won 12 straight games and have no plans on ending their historic season anytime soon.
"I told my wife we have to wait to January to get out [on vacation]" said Bulldogs Head Coach Damon Wilson. "This is major. Just to have the opportunity to go this far in NCAA playoff history is great."
The Bulldogs also claimed their third consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Football Championship. It was the third straight season Bowie State has defeated Fayetteville State in the title game. The Bulldogs become just the fifth school in history to three-peat and just the second school remaining to do so within the CIAA.
"These guys are playing very selflessly. The guys are making the sacrifice for the next player to make plays. It's working out for the greater good of the team," said Wilson.
Bowie State is led by 24 seniors and 11 graduate students as they take on the top-seeded Valdosta State Blazers. "We are battled tested," said coach Wilson, "We are ready for it."
The Bulldogs will fly out to Valdosta State on Thursday as they look to make even more history.
