Prince George's Community College men's basketball team secures position in national tournament

Prince George's Community College has been approved by the NJCAA to upgrade its Division III intercollegiate athletic teams to the Division II level.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — The Prince George's Community College men's basketball team is heading to New York to compete in a national tournament.

The Owls competed in the Regional 10 Champions on Saturday against Sandy Hills Community College. The team defeated Sandhill 96 to 84. Saturday's win secured their bid to the National Junior College Athletics Association District Division III National Basketball Championship for a chance to clinch a national title from March 13-16.

“Today means everything to our program, student athletes and college community," said Owls Head Coach, Terrell Harris in a text-exchange with WUSA 9 Sports Anchor, Desmond Purnell.  "The support we received today was phenomenal as we made history. The job is not finished though. We have two out of three championships. We have one more to get which is the national championship.”

Last Saturday, the team won the Regional Championship, a first since 2018-2019 season. The team entered as the number one overall seed and did not disappoint, bringing home the title for the first time since the 2021-2022 season.

The women's basketball team also won their NJCAA tournament on Saturday. They went head-to-head with Patrick & Henry Community College, defeating them 67-58.

Saturday's title wins aren't just milestones for the team, they're important for the school as well. Prince George's Community College has been approved by the NJCAA to upgrade its Division III intercollegiate athletic teams to the Division II level. This allows PGCC to offer scholarship opportunities to student-athletes pursuing a college degree while participating in intercollegiate athletics. The change will go into effect at the start of the 2024-2025 academic school year. This will also affect the school's soccer, baseball and softball teams.
