Some things are more important than wins and losses. No one embodies that fact more than Larry Patent.
The little league baseball coach was awarded the coach of year for the Arlington Little League. Patent beat out 276 other coaches in the league.
What makes Larry Patent special, is that he coaches a team made up of players with mental and physical disabilities.
The parents of the players on the team greatly appreciate what coach Patent does for their children.
"Larry's a wonderful coach," says Tom Tiernan whose daughter Anna plays for the team. "He has the enthusiasm to match the kids. He's very helpful. He knows the players, knows their strengths and weaknesses, and plays to their strengths and weaknesses."
The players certainly appreciate coach Patent as well.
"Coach Larry is awesome," says Anna. "He's cool, energetic."
For Patent, it was a friend of his who inspired him to work with the team.
"A friend of mine who I used to work with, his son was in Challenger, and he got me involved," says coach Patent. "Even though his son has aged out of the program, I've continued. It's a love of the game, and something to give back to the kids."
Coach Larry, as he's affectionately referred to by his players, has been the head coach for the past 15 years.
The Arlington Little League was also presented with the League Spirit Award.
