WASHINGTON — Prince George's County has a strong history of producing powerful prodigy athletes. On Friday, two of them will appear together on the same fight card in the District.
Lamont Roach Jr. and and Jordan Roach are boxing brothers, separated by eight years. Their father, Lamont Roach Sr., is their promoter and coach.
"It's a great feeling to know that your family is part of what you do," said Lamont Roach Jr.
The patriarch of the pugilists agrees.
"F.O.E.: Family over everything. That's a true definition in our family. We're family first," Roach Sr. said.
Lamont "The Reaper" Roach Jr. is 28 and a World Boxing Association Super Featherweight Champion with a record of 24-1-1. Nine of those wins came by way of knockout.
He will defend his title against No. 12 WBA ranked Feargal “Fearless” McCrory from Northern Ireland at D.C.'s Entertainment and Sports Arena.
"We're not swayed by me being a champion. It's like being the underdog. I still treat myself like I'm the underdog," Roach Jr. said.
But before the older brother steps into the squared circle, the younger Roach will make his professional debut at the age of 20. The flyweight is a seven-time amateur national champion.
"He grew up in the gym watching me, and once he decided to box I just knew he'd be awesome," Roach Jr. said.
Roach Jr. said his little brother might be a highlight.
"I think he might be able to steal the show with an emphatic knockout," he said.
For Jordan Roach, he is excited to make his debut with his brother.
"It's great man, we're living our dreams," Jordan Roach said.
Father Lamont Roach Sr. has a dynamic relationship with his kids, and they can't seem to get enough of each other.
"We go on trips together, we do vacations together, we do family events. We're big on family," Roach Sr. said.
Now the Roaches are hoping to wrap up Friday night's fight card with a full set of family victories.
"You couldn't draw up a better picture you know? Coming back home for a world title defense, your youngest boy making his pro debut on an undercard in from of some screaming fans," Roach Sr.
Doors open at 5 p.m. with the first bell scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets range from $75 to $500 (plus taxes and fees). More details and tickets can be found here.
