WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The 2015-16 high school football season is underway in the DMV area, which also marks the start of some intense, last-minute recruiting by universities in order to sign top-notch players.
The DMV area has become a hotbed for football talent and WUSA9 takes a look at some of the areas top recruits according to the ESPN Top 300 of 2016 list.
Shane Simmons, DE, DeMatha
Simmons is a five-star recruit out of football powerhouse DeMatha Catholic located in Hyattsville, Md. Ranked the number 13 player in the country, Simmons has already committed to Penn State. Simmons had offers from 20+ schools, including Alabama, Florida State and Baylor, but eventually chose James Franklin's Nittany Lions where he should have an immediate impact on the field. At 6'4" and 230 pounds, Simmons is already an athletic freak who will only get bigger, faster and stronger once he gets to Happy Valley. Simmons has a knack for getting after the quarterback but is no slouch when it comes to defending against the run as well. Look for Simmons to be a potential star at Penn State.
Dwayne Haskins Jr., QB, Bullis
Haskins is a four-star recruit out of The Bullis School in Potomac, Md. Haskins, the number 23 ranked player in the country, decided to keep his talents local when he committed to the University of Maryland despite offers from over 35 schools, including Ohio State, LSU, Auburn and Alabama. Haskins should provide some much needed stability at quarterback for the Terrapins, who have had struggles finding their guy under center for quite some time now. At 6'3" and 205 pounds, Haskins possesses prototypical pocket passer size and still has room to grow. Although he has the athleticism to get outside of the pocket and extend plays with his legs, Haskins does most of his damage in between the tackles, using his strong and accurate arm to get the ball down the field.
Trevon Diggs, Athlete, The Avalon School
Diggs is a four-star recruit out of The Avalon School in Rockville, Md and is the number 122 ranked player in the country. Unlike Simmons and Haskins, Diggs has yet to commit to a school, but has offers from several big names including Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Penn State and Georgia. Diggs does a little bit of everything for Avalon, lining up at running back, wide receiver, corner back and punt returner. Listed at 6'2" and 182 pounds, Diggs may be a little undersized to be a true running back at the collegiate level, but his sub-4.5 speed makes him a valuable weapon in any offense (and defense). It will be interesting to see where Diggs ends up as National Signing Day approaches.
