Giving 'overtime' a new meaning

Cumberland Valley hoists the Pennsylvania District 3-AAAA trophy after a 7-overtime game against Central Dauphin.

When playoff fields are narrowed to two finalists, sports fans can only expect, and non-biased observers hope, that the two contenders are evenly matched.

Well, that could be said about the football 'show' put on between Cumberland Valley and Central Dauphin in Pennsylvania's District 3-AAAA state championship this past weekend. This truly was a game for the ages...and it lasted long after the fourth quarter clock expired.

Seven overtime periods afterwards, to be exact.

Funnily enough, USA Today reports that the game could've gone even longer if Central Dauphin head coach Glen McNamee hadn't elected to try for a two-point conversion attempt after his team's seventh straight score. Instead of kicking the extra point, the Rams were stopped before the goal line and that is how the season...and the new record-holder for points and overtimes in a single game, ended.

While only 13 points apiece were scored in regulation, seven touchdown cat-and-mouse overtime left the Eagles and the Rams with a 62-61 final.
