Ashburn, Va. (WUSA9)—The football field at Broad Run High School is in no condition to host football games, suffice to say this is not the way the Spartan football team envisioned the 2015 campaign.
"I feel bad for the seniors," said Head Coach Matt Griffis.
"I was pretty frustrated," said Senior linebacker Matt Meier.
Here's why, Broad Run's Jennings Stadium has been turned into a construction zone. Turf field installation was delayed as the district sought to procure an acceptable bid, thus project launch didn't begin until it was too late to impact regular season games.
"I was mad I was like my senior year are you serious?" said Senior Chris Moore.
Yep, his senior year. Broad Run won't have home games until late October, maybe.
Despite those difficult circumstances the Spartans have gotten off to an undefeated start, including a 56-21 throttling of regional power Centreville September 18th. The outcome was surprising to some but not to Broad Run who has embraced its unorthodox journey.
"I think looking back it's turned into a real positive thing," said Meier.
A real positive thing and a real loud thing. The school's student section dubbed the Maroon Crew has become the traveling crew following the team wherever they play.
"It's like a big relief knowing that your people are there supporting you," said Moore. "When you score there's nothing better than hearing them yell."
Yelling, there's been plenty of that on the road. Now if only Broad Run could get a little home cooking.
"We're hoping the field is released to us October 20th, which is 27 days away but who's counting," said Griffis laughing.
