Sitting down with new Commanders running back Austin Ekeler

Newly minted running back Austin Ekeler sits down with Chick Hernandez in our latest 1-on-1

WASHINGTON — One of the key additions to the Washington Commanders will most likely be running back Austin Ekeler.

Ekeler spent the last seven years with the L.A, Chargers. At 29 years old, some might consider him long in the tooth, but in two of the previous three seasons, he’s led the NFL in total touchdowns.

One of the reasons he signed with the Commanders was the chance to build something new with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. When I asked him what he liked about the offense my question was too early to answer.

“It is a loaded question," Ekeler said. “I think that we build what we like about it.”

The younger players on this offense have become sponges when it comes to Ekeler. His leadership was born out of necessity.

“You know, coming from an undrafted position six on the depth chart, I’m getting a lot of mental wraps. I gotta make sure I know what I’m doing so when my time comes I’m available," he said.

After so many years on the West Coast, I asked him what he knew about the Commander's franchise before coming to Washington.

“I didn’t know anything about Washington Commanders," he said. "I knew they changed their name a lot, but I’ve been learning. I’ve learned about the DMV area. I’m getting acclimated to the fans.”

Ekeler will have a ton more fans if he brings his level of production to the burgundy and gold.
