ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Gerry Bertier, the captain of the 1971 T.C. Williams football team that inspired the movie Remember the Titans, will be inducted into Alexandria City Public Schools first-ever Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Alexandria City School Board is expected to approve a list of nominees that includes Bertier along with Earl Lloyd, the first black player in the NBA, and Olympic silver medalist Chip Lubson. The three will be among the first alumni to be officially recognized for their contributions.

"This truly is a fantastic way to honor Alexandria's athletes. We have had so many athletes come out of Alexandria's public high schools that we really needed to do something lasting to acknowledge them," said School Board Member and Hall of Fame Committee Liaison Bill Campbell.

Twenty former athletes will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame at halftime during the game between Parker-Gray and Hoffman-Boston on December 5.

Nominations will be approved by the Alexandria City School Board on Thursday, Nov. 13.

"We will be inducting new people each year, probably five to six new members. However, we felt we needed to start off with a larger inaugural group and so 20 amazing former student-athletes will make up this first class," said Campbell.

There are also plans, in future years, to select and induct outstanding teams into the hall.
