Baltimore is trying to make sure they get in the playoffs, but something that happened 40 years ago on the team has our attention.

It was then that an accomplished, future Hall-of-Famer spent just one year playing in Birdland.

The year was 1976. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest won an Oscar for best movie. Silly Love Songs by Wings was on the top of the Billboard chart. And the Reds swept the Yankees in the World Series.

Reggie Jackson was not on that Yankees team.

Jackson played for the Orioles in 1976 traded from the Athletics, He didn't play right away, instead he sat out for the first 16 games over salary dispute. But it worked out for him; he got bumped from $165,000 to $200,000 a year.

That's right, Mr. October was an Oriole.

Col Victor Tall is a Reggie Jackson fan.

"I love him, followed him his whole career, unbelievable opportunity," Tall said.

But even he didn't know Jackson played for Baltimore.

"I did not. I did not know that," Tall said. "Wow."

Former Raven, Tony Siragusa did. We spotted "Goose" in super fan mode, getting Reggie's autograph at a recent sports memorabilia show in Chantilly.

"I'm a little giggly right now. Reggie, Mr. October," Siragusa said. "I had to I'm a huge fan."

And he's not the only one. We saw plenty of folks lined up for #44's autograph.

Even though he was only there a year, Jackson told WUSA9 he has some fond memories.

"I enjoyed playing for Earl Weaver. I had great memories of the city. I loved hitting in front of Lee May and I played with Brooks Robinson and Doug DeCinces, Bobby Grich, Paul Blair in left field," Jackson said. "It was a special place and I enjoyed it."

Jackson's first game for the Orioles was May 2, 1976. One year after the Athletics and before the Yankees.

Former O's Catcher Rick Dempsey said Jackson was more fun to play against, than with, but he's not short of anecdotes.

"Reggie would always come up to 'em and say I ain't never seen anybody who had a swing like that who could hit that many line drives and always get caught. There's something wrong. He says, 'I'm not gonna hang around you, you might be bad luck for me.'"

Jim Palmer, who has three World Series rings, also played on that team. And was a little disappointed Jackson didn't report on time or stay with Baltimore.

"We would have had Reggie for '77, '78, '79," he said. "I wouldn't have had room for all world series rings on one hand."

"He used to look at me, Diamond (he used to call me Diamond Jim) but he'd go, 'Diamond, when the smoke clears, I'll have my 30 dingers and you'll have your 20 games.'"

As it turns out, Palmer won 22 games that year, but Jackson only hit 27 home runs.

He even appeared on Sports Illustrated that season. Some fans have that gold mine of a treasure.
