Storm was a bust in DC, but heavy snow did fall well north and west

The rain/snow line ended up 30 miles farther northwest than thought

WASHINGTON — While we had mostly rain in the D.C. Metro, areas well north and northwest of Washington saw some heavy snow Sunday night.  The rain snow line was 25 to 30 miles farther northwest than forecasted so the heavier snows stayed away from the D.C. metro.

WUSA 9's Jess Arnold was in the Sheeny Weather Explorer Sunday night in Hagerstown, MD where she encountered snow covered roads just after 7 PM.

Early and late season storms across the mid-Atlantic are tough to forecast. Snow in March has a tough time sticking during the day. Storms in March also favor higher elevations.

Here's a closer look at where we thought the rain-snow line would set up versus where it actually did:

Arctic Blast This Week
The week ahead will feature an arctic intrusion with the coldest day being Wednesday. We have a threat for a few snow showers Tuesday afternoon and perhaps a little more wintry mischief Thursday night into Friday morning.
