What DC residents can and can't do during the government shutdown

The National Parks will remain open, for example, but with limited services.

With the government shutdown underway, D.C. residents will still be able to access certain things, but some changes will apply.

Here’s what will be affected in the District:

At the Kennedy Center, all performances will go on as scheduled, but public hours will be affected. With nighttime performances, the building will only be open at 5 p.m. and during daytime performances, hours will vary. The box office and gift shops will be open regular hours. The rest of the time the building will be closed to the public, except to purchase tickets, shop in the gift shop, or for appointments and rehearsals.

Some national parks, including the National Mall, will remain open. However, staff will be limited, as well as services, including restrooms, trash collection, and more. However, NPS warns that their websites will not be updated with information and access could change without warning.

D.C.'s Department of Public Works says they will collect litter in the national parks until the shutdown is over in the meantime.

All Smithsonian museums, research centers and the National Zoo will remain open through January 1, using prior-year funds. As already planned, Smithsonian museums will be closed on December 25.

Other museums, such as the Law Enforcement, the Bible Museum, and the Newseum, will remain open.

The Ford’s Theater says their scheduled performances of A Christmas Carol will continue through December 30. The Center for Education and Leadership will remain open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
