WASHINGTON — More than 100 people gathered in a Northeast DC neighborhood to honor the life of Makiyah Wilson on the one year anniversary of her murder.
The 10-year-old died in DC's Clay Terrace neighborhood on July 16, 2018 after four men opened fire in the area. Eleven people have been charged in connection to the incident.
On Tuesday, Makiyah's family and friends marched from H.D. Woodson High School to DC Scholars Public Charter School.
Both Makiyah's father and mother attended the event.
"It just let us know that we're not alone," said Wilson's father, Michael. "We're not going through this alone."
Wilson said it was important that the neighborhood come together to show the city that violence is not the answer.

"Every time you hear something about another child or another victim, it reminds me of that day [Makiyah died]," he said.
